Strengthening Maritime Education: Issues and Strategies Round Table Discussion

CRC held a round table discussion on the theme, Strengthening Maritime Education: Issues and Strategies at the University of Asia and the Pacific on June 18, 2014.

The objective of the RTD is to bring together representatives of select maritime institutions, PACUCOA and other government agencies to discuss ways to strengthen maritime education.

Dr. Veronica Ramirez, CRC’s Director for Operations and holder of the BPI Professorial Chair for Migration and Overseas Filipino Work, welcomed the guests to UA&P, after which, the speakers, presented on various topics. Ms. Josephine Francisco, President of NYK-FIL and Group Chief Quality Officer of TDG, spoke about “Managing Effective Maritime Institutions.” Dr. Angelica Baylon, Director of the Department of Research and Extension Services of Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), tackled “Maritime Education in Grades 11 and 12.” Dr. Elizabeth Salabas, President of the Philippine Association of Maritime Institutions (PAMI), talked about “The EMSA Audit: Impact on Maritime Education.” Captain Emmanuel Regio, President of the Filipino Association for Mariners’ Employment, Inc. (FAME) and Chairman of the Board and President of Eastgate Maritime Corporation, discussed the “The EMSA Audit: Impact on Maritime Industry.” and the Chairman of the Philippine Association of College and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), Dr. Jaime Buzar, gave a presentation on “The Strengths of Accredited Maritime Programs.”

An open forum followed the presentations, in which guests from different agencies and institutions participated: Atty. Forter Puguon of the National Maritime Polyteghnic, Capt. Mario Bautro of Baliwag Maritime Academy, Capt. Julio Jose Birtucio, Jr. of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, C/E. Aris Amado Dolot and Capt. Teri Orlan Odal NYK-TDG Maritime Academy, Dr. Lourdes Arañador and Capt. Luis Evidente of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, Dr. Arlene Paderanga of Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS), C/E Gary Ancheta of Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), Atty. Herman Pascua of Associate Philippine Seafarers’ Union (APSU) and Dr. Amihan April Alcazar of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig.
